PCOS – Making excellent Progress

I got the results back from my latest saliva test and was thrilled with the results!!!  Over the last year, I have been eating pretty low carb to help control the insulin resistance that seems to be an earmark for PCOS.  I was also taking bio-identical progesterone, to try and achieve some balance with the extra estrogen in my system and was also taking indole-3-carbinol to help remove the extra estrogen in my system.  I also did manage to lose about 35 pounds in the last year. However, I was not under the impression that any of this would necessarily change the PCOS.  I was under the impression that this would never go away.

Last year (May 2007) my results looked like this:

Estradiol             40   normal range (1.0-10.8)
Progesterone      60   normal range (127-446)
Testosterone    270   normal range (6.0-49)
DHEA                500   normal range (106-300)

Lots of extra estrogen, DHEA, and testosterone which were all contributing to fast weight gain, and inability to lose weight, chin hairs, low sex drive, trouble sleeping, and cystic acne.

My latest test results (September 2008) show my estrogen and progesterone back in balance.  My DHEA and testosterone levels are within the expected range but are now on the low side of normal; but it is easy to add things back – it is lots harder to take away excess.

Estradiol                 1.5   normal range (1.0-10.8)
Progesterone      430.6   normal range (127-446)
Testosterone        24.6   normal range (6.0-49)
DHEA                    32.6   normal range (106-300)

My cortisol levels are also back in normal (though still low) ranges, which means the adrenal fatigue that I struggle with is coming back into balance.  All-in-all this has been a wonderful day.

What has made the change? Well, I am sure that the weight loss was very helpful.  I really think that adding iodine to my diet in the form of kelp has been a huge help.  I have been taking a lot of Kelp over the last 3 months in an effort to saturate my body tissue with iodine.   Want to talk about an easy way to get your hormones back – I took about 10 capsules per day of a product called Thyroid Activator for 3 months. Thyroid Activator has good levels of kelp in it and can be found here: http://www.mynsp.com/renewedhealth/products/guide.aspx?stockNum=1224

Ask your doctor about testing for iodine deficiency if you have PCOS…  If you are deficienct (and a lot of us are), it may be an answer for you, too!

Very much agreed in regards with the Thyroid Activator. I have been taking it for the past 3 weeks and can actually feel I have much more energy and do not feel lethargic most of the time. Exercise and thyroid help are very important.
