Itchiness won out as last week topic of discussion on our support calls. It seemed as if almost everyone was struggling with this particular issue. Itchiness often accompanies candida infections for a couple of reasons. 1) you may have a fungal infection on the surface of your skin (rare) or 2) you are dealing with internal toxicity created by the candida or cleansing (more common). I am going to discuss the latter issue.
Candida is a living organism and, as such, it will create waste products. Candida will put between 70-80 different types of toxins into the system; some of the more prevalent toxins are formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and ethanol. The blood stream will pick these toxins up and try to carry them to the liver to be filtered out of the system. However, if the liver is overwhelmed and fatigued it may not be able to handle the toxin load. If this should occur, however, the liver has a back up plan. It will utilize the skin (the largest cleansing organ in the body) to help get rid of the extra toxins.
The body will create an itch response in order to get you to scratch the skin. Scratching will cause the blood to come close to the surface of the skin which facilitates the passing of toxins through the pores of the skin. If the itching is transient, meaning that it seems to be moving all around the body, then it is almost certainly caused by toxicity.
You can alleviate this by taking a soluble fiber containing apple pectin, psyllium, or acacia fiber. Epsom Salt baths (approximately 1 cup in warm bath water and soak for 15-20 minutes) can also be very helpful. Plenty of water is a must, as well. If these tactics do not work, you should consider slowing down your cleanse by taking less of whatever you are taking each day.
Itching during a detox is your body’s way of letting you know that it is getting a bit overloaded. Please listen to it!
